GIS stands for Geographic Information System. At its heart, GIS is software which combines spatial mapping and analysis with database management. It is a powerful set of tools for storing and retrieving data at will, transforming and displaying spatial data from the real world for a particular set of purposes.

At all levels of government, GIS can be used to help improve transparency, identify at risk communities and be used to help manage critical resources of the community.
